Morning light illuminates fog rising over a sea of badlands in Southern Utah.
I took this back in 2017 and it was one of my favorite photos that I captured during a trip that my girlfriend and I took and I intermittently worked on this photo for literally years. I never force myself to work on my photos if I’m not feeling like it’s coming together and I just couldn't make this one work for me. Most of my struggles came with getting the color where I wanted. The warmth of the sun hitting the fog against the grayish blue badlands was challenging for me to balance. Every time I looked at the photo I would see areas where the colors leaned green.. or magenta... or didn't match/make sense. Over and over I would set the image aside and eventually try again. I've started this photo from scratch more times than I can remember, each time taking it in a different direction. It turns out that the first iteration ended up being "the one' once I got everything to where I wanted it. Photo © copyright by TJ Thorne.
